About This Course
Clinical supervisors carry a responsibility that goes beyond signing hours: deciding whether a supervisee is ready for independent practice. Most supervisors were never trained for that part of the role. In our study of 97 Texas field instructors and clinical supervisors, two thirds had never received any gatekeeping training, yet most had already faced a supervisee or student they could not recommend. This course treats gatekeeping as what it is: a core function of clinical supervision. You'll learn to screen incoming supervisees before supervision begins, assess competence developmentally across the supervision period, distinguish growth areas from the ethical and competency concerns that signal unsuitability, and structure remediation that gives a struggling supervisee a real path forward. The course includes case-based scenarios drawn from actual supervision practice, a four-step escalation framework, and guidance on documentation and the recommendation decision under the Texas supervision rules restructured in March 2026. It also addresses the part nobody puts in a manual: the professional and emotional weight of holding the gate. For Texas Council-approved supervisors (LCSW-S), field instructors, supervisors-in-training, and anyone who evaluates practitioner readiness. 3 CE hours.
